TDK releases another highlight in their series of memorable live jazz concert recordings from the last decades. The 1986 concert at the popular Zelt-Musikfestival features the quintet formation of musician, eminent bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Holland.
Until the mid-eighties, Dave Holland was mainly known as sideman to his mentor Miles Davis or to Chick Corea. When he founded his own quintet in 1986, his place in jazz history was well established. In fact, Holland’s musical activities had heightened the awareness of the double-bass as an instrument in its own right, as Jazz Podium pointed out: “It’s true that Holland’s bass often appears as the engine with ongoing bass lines, but Holland is always revealed as the musical coordinator, the one who enables bebop to become ‘free-bop’, and whose composer’s calculations are behind the arc reaching from traditional trombone-trumpet-saxophone introductions, with constantly varying orchestral sound patterns, to improvisations set free from harmonic schemata, without overstretching either the arc or the listener.”
Charles Mingus was an important model for Dave Holland as bassist, composer and bandleader, especially with regard to the emancipation of the bass and the ensemble style. And Holland is also a brother to the American jazz giant in other respects: he constantly returns to a piece over the years and alters it substantially. The classic Homecoming, which can also be enjoyed on this DVD - originally composed 1984 - runs through his work illustrating the alternation between continuity and change that is so typical of his style. He told Marcus A. Woelfle, the author of the very informative booklet text accompanying this DVD that the piece lends itself to being played in all manner of different ways. To compose a song like that he would work it out on the bass, sometimes using a piano as well, sometimes not.
If Holland’s compositions are unmistakable, so too is his sound: strong, clear and warm – it makes him one of the few bassists capable of putting on purely solo recitals that never grow boring. But for the most part the great communicator has realized his music in combos of four or five members. In Freiburg the sidemen were people who already had, or would soon have, reputations as bandleaders in their own right: Steve Coleman who matured into a great soloist at Holland’s side, Kenny Wheeler, the great veteran of modern jazz, Robin Eubanks and Marvin “Smitty” Smith: Holland gave all of them plenty of space.
Holland has always emphasized that, for him, music is working in a group. He would like everyone in his group to feel that he has his own place, that he can be himself and give expression to his own imagination and his own creative efforts. All the same, the result always bears Dave Holland’s signature. The visual and aural proof of his success is in the hands of everyone who owns this DVD.
This DVD continues the series of legendary Jazz live-recordings, which has already seen the release of concerts and sessions with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Lionel Hampton, Archie Shepp, Art Blakey, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Stéphane Grappeli, Cedar Walton, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Gil Evans, Eliane Elias, Horace Silver, Ahmad Jamal, Paco de Lucia, Bobby McFerrin, McCoy Tyner and Joe Zawinul.
An easily recognisable cover design will highlight TDK’s jazz releases. Like the classical music releases by TDK, the jazz titles will have a design that distinguishes them as TDK Jazz DVD, while at the same time maintaining their individual and topical colour scheme and artist-driven cover.
In the run up to spring 2006, TDK will issue ten selected titles from their Jazz catalogue. With this campaign, the motherland of jazz, North America, will see first releases of concert recordings by some of the international Jazz greats, which have so far only been available in Europe.
The new TDK Jazz DVDs will include live recordings of the Dave Holland Quintet, Billy Cobham's Glass Menagerie, Gil Evans and His Orchestra, the Modern Jazz Quartet’s 35th and 40th Anniversary Concerts, the Trio Rypdal, The Band from Utopia, World of Rhythm and ESP2. |
